Testimonial from the actress Alice Marshall

From the first session to the final pre-audition calm-down phone call, Tilly’s care and attention is absolutely invaluable.

Rehearsing for drama school auditions is a daunting process that can make you feel frighteningly alone; I couldn’t have done it without having her on hand to guide and coach. She has a remarkable ability to bring out the best in the performer, without ‘choreographing’ or over working anything.

Her process is organic and collaborative; her direction is insightful and completely game-changing. However prepared you think you are, however sure you are about your ideas, I now can’t imagine approaching a speech without running it by Tilly first! There is always something new to think about, and the tiniest change can make the world of difference. She provides a safe and welcoming environment, and instantly makes you feel comfortable enough to try absolutely anything.

Her good humour and patience are limitless, and I know I couldn’t have done it without her.

Help With Auditions

Audition Doctor was set up by the actress Tilly Blackwood to help actors with their next audition for TV, Film, and Theatre.

Audition Doctor offers the following services to help you with your next audition:

Drama School applicants
One to one coaching consists of an introductory meeting to discuss the student’s needs and requirements and work out a plan and strategy up until drama school. All work is tailor made to suit each student individual needs, so they can represent themselves at their very best in front of an audition panel.

The aim is to give each student, not only their best fighting chance to secure tenure, but to begin a better understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses and how to work with them.

Professional Actors
Coaching is focused on re-acquainting professional actors with their strengths and working on their weaknesses. The text based sessions and participants bring their own material for the impending audition. Sessions are focused solely on igniting confidence, but never losing sight of the main prize: securing the job. Coaching sessions can be given on a one to one basis or in groups of four to five people and last approximately three hours.

Public Speaking for Business
Coaching sessions are tailored to the client’s exact needs. Held at either the client’s home or offices, sessions focus on overcoming any fear of public speaking, conveying the message and engaging audiences in order to deliver a knockout presentation.

Courses

Tilly Blackwood continues to hold coaching and tuition sessions for actors from the world renowned Actors Centre in Central London where she runs weekly Audition Masterclasses for professional actors, drama students and Acting Classes for beginners either on a one-to-one basis or in small groups.

Testimonials:

“Tilly is a brilliant teacher if you want to lift any kind of public performance to the highest level. She is a serious motivator who is obsessed with detail and will not rest until she has squeezed the absolute best out of you. I couldn’t recommend her more highly for anyone working on their presenting technique.”
Viv Groskop, Literary events host and BBC Radio 4 broadcaster (Any Questions, Woman’s Hour, Today).

“At the centre of any modern business is communication. From experience, many failures occur when strategy and detail haven’t been communicated effectively. To be a key person of influence- both within the office and the wider industry- you need to be able to sell your ideas, both one to one and to larger audiences. I went to Tilly to work on the latter: how to argue in debates; make speeches in big venues; give lectures at academic institutions. The experience has been very valuable. As a writer, i am used to constructing long sentences on the page, which people get lost in when spoken. We made snappier lines, and evolved a delivery of varied (rather than flat) intonation and as an expression of personality- rhetoric in the old sense. I recommend Tilly to anyone who wants to develop the communication skills required for success in the complex and competitive, contemporary world.”
Will Hunter, Deputy Editor, The Architectural Review

The first job that Tilly helped me with was for a series for Canal + called BORGIA. Tilly changed my performance to match what television directors on a major international series would look for. This worked and I was cast by the Emmy award winning director, Dearbhla Walsh. Dearbhla was very impressed with my audition. However, this audition was all the work that Tilly had put into it with me and her technique helped me land the role. I would not of been able to do this without her.

The second job, was the Ridley Scott series, WORLD WITHOUT END. I landed the part a second time in a row. Again, only with Tilly’s help and technique.

Drama School Feedback

Testimonial from Charlotte Hope

Tilly is totally fab. I have worked with a lot of acting coaches and she is the best by far – I always look forward to our sessions and always really enjoy them.

I have worked as a professional actress for 2 years and only recently have I discovered Tilly. Before, I’d always felt fairly confident with my TV auditions – I’d been getting a decent amount of work and felt I was giving them my best shot. However, when I work on auditions with Tilly, they are so much better. It’s no coincidence that I now have 3 jobs back to back – a stand-alone episode of Holby City, a new BBC3 comedy called Some Girls and a part in the new Les Mis film, directed by Tom Hooper. Tilly helped me with all the auditions and I’m sure that she had a big part to play in getting me the jobs. She’s also brilliant at theatre auditions.

I didn’t go to drama school and always thought that as a result I wasn’t good enough to do theatre, but Tilly worked through technique for theatre speeches and really honed my audition technique .

As a result, I managed to get a recall for a really great new play at the Hampstead theatre. And, added to being a brilliant coach, she’s also a really lovely person, someone I enjoy seeing every week. I couldn’t recommend her enough.

Audition Classes Feedback From Acting Student – Roisin Keogh

Before coming to see Tilly, my confidence has seriously depleted as I kept finding myself at a loss when it came to auditioning; to such an extent that on one particular important audition I dried mid monologue and I was unable to continue. However from my first session with Tilly, she quickly saw where I was going wrong and pointed me in the right direction. Tilly made me realise that I was capable of doing this as a career but I needed to have a more positive state of mind, if I was to be successful in the future. With Tilly’s help and coaching I found a new Shakespeare speech that really allowed me to show myself to my full potential in an audition.

After only two sessions with Tilly I have landed a role in a Summer Shakespeare tour this summer. Thank You Tilly.

Feedback from Acting Class Members 2012

Tilly manages to strike the rare balance of being incredibly patient yet uncompromisingly demanding. This, combined with her generosity of spirit and good humour is an absolute necessity during the often strenuous process of applying to drama schools. She creates an informal and relaxed workspace which allows you to feel completely unselfconscious and free to experiment while simultaneously compelling you to justify why you have made certain decisions. Her rigorous attitude towards her teaching means that you never feel that you have taken the easy option as she draws your attention to the myriad of alternatives.

Her extensive experience in theatre means that she expertly appraises your individual strengths and plays to them yet also alerts you to the inevitable bad habits that every untrained actor unknowingly assimilates. Her unceasing pursuit in trying to extract what she knows you are capable of sometimes culminates in, what she calls, “a break-through moment”. This is when all the advice she has given you, after weeks or perhaps even months, finally percolates and you do your speech in a way that surprises even yourself. You leave with the heady exhilaration of the high-five she’s just given you (these are administered sparingly and when you get one, you quite literally feel like top dog) and the progress that you’ve made. There lies her true brilliance- in getting you to believe that it was all you, when actually, there is absolutely no way you could have got there without her.
